GLAAD UPDATES: More gay characters on the network, except in Cbl
Los Angeles, CA, October 1, 2009 – The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today released the 14th edition of “Where are we on TV” study, a comprehensive review of primetime scripts LGBT characters in the 2009-2010 television season. The number of scripts LGBT regular series found in the current cable networks will continue to decline, from 40 in 2007, 32 in 2008 to only 25 this yearThe report shows that 18 LGBT characters represent 3% of regular scripted series on television 2009-2010, from 1.3% in 2006, 1.1% in 2007, and 2.6 % in 2008.
Research and information provided by the five broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and CW – GLAAD “Where are we on TV” study examined 79 scripted comedies and dramas announced to air next season, and had a total of 600 regular series, of which 18 are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender
“Americans now see LGBT couples marrying, raising families and contributing to their communities. As more and more Americans are these fair and accurate picture of our community is reflected in the small screen, come to accept and understand their LGBT friends and neighbors.”It is encouraging to see not only an increase in the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters in television, but stories about the LGBT community are increasingly reflecting the current issues affecting our lives,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.
For this coming season, ABC continues to lead the other television channels in LGBT representation, with eight characters from the 168 LGBT series regular characters in total (5%), the largest number and percentage of LGBT characters on any network for the season 2009-2010. NBC has three LGBT series regular characters (3%) out of 126. In the current cable networks, the number of LGBT series regular characters announced fell to 25 from last year’s total of 32 years. Fox, which two years ago appears only zero series regular LGBT characters at the launch of the season, now offers four series regular LGBT 105 (4%). The CW is showing a gradual improvement, with two series regular LGBT characters of the 69 (3%).
Africa has the representation of America remains at 11% (67) while Latino representation was reduced to 5% (27). Male characters continue to outweigh female characters 57% (345) to 43% (255) on a global basis, while 77% (466) of all series regular characters are white, 2% on last year. Announced the 18 regular LGBT characters on primetime broadcast in 2009-2010 season, only four are people of color.
